Varicose veins stopped me from doing the things I love. After all, varicose veins can be very painful. Not to mention how unsightly they are. But thanks to Vein Associates, my varicose veins are just a memory. Betty H.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vein Associates of Edina
Rating 5 5 Star Ratings, Vein Associates of Edina
After suffering for 9 years with pain and heaviness, after seeing doctor after doctor, spending money on procedures that didn't fix the problem, Dr. Reese has fixed my veins with one procedure. It makes all my previous suffering a thing of the past. Vein Associates is the best! I tell anyone I meet there’s only one place to get your veins treated, at Vein Associates!
Q: How do I begin treatment for my veins?
A: During your initial consultation, the physician will evaluate your symptoms and examine your legs. Any questions you may have will be answered; your expectations and anticipated results will also be discussed. The doctor will give you an estimate of the number and type of treatments you may need, which will vary depending upon the size and extent of your problem. In most cases, a detailed ultrasound test will be needed to assess the extent of your vein problem. After final treatment recommendations have been made by the physician, you should then be able to schedule an appointment for treatment.

Q: How long will my treatment take?
A: Sclerotherapy treatment sessions are usually 30 minutes each. Every patient is different, and the number of sessions needed varies depending on the severity of your condition. Most cases require three to six treatments; however, this is only a guideline. Your individual case may be different. Your legs may begin to show improvement in as little as a few weeks, but the best results are usually seen after several months. After healing has occurred, spider veins and bulging varicose veins will be gone, leaving you with healthy, great-looking legs.

Q: Are there any restrictions to my physical activity after vein treatment?
A: We do discourage heavy exercise for up to 72 hrs after the treatment. However normal daily activities can be resumed immediately. We also discourage direct sun exposure to treated areas for a couple weeks after each treatment. (Sunscreens are adequate protection during this time).

Q: Will my insurance pay for treatments?
A: The initial consultation (office visit) and any ultrasound testing is usually covered by your insurance. We participate with many insurance plans, so your co-pay will vary with your insurance plan. Large varicose veins are a medical condition, and most insurance carriers will pay for their elimination. As part of our service to you, we will contact your insurance company and determine your medical coverage. Treatment of spider veins, regardless of symptoms, is always considered cosmetic by insurance companies and is not covered.

Q: What causes varicose veins?
A: Currently we understand that up to 40% of the population has or will develop varicose veins. This is because the major factor in causing varicose veins is hereditary. Vein problems can be aggravated by pregnancy and estrogen levels. We also see more veins for those people where standing for prolonged periods is part of their lifestyle or occupation. Varicose veins are usually worse in women, but men have them too.

Q: Don't I need these veins for my circulation?
A: Spider and varicose veins are actually a burden to your circulation. When varicose veins are eliminated, the legs feel lighter and more energetic because the venous circulation is improved, and the body has re-routed unhealthy blood flow into stronger, healthier, deeper veins.

Q: I had vein surgery. Can you take out more veins?
A: In a word...yes! The venous system is a vast network of interconnected veins with much built-in redundancy. The superficial veins (the only ones we operate on) are of minor importance even when they are normal. The only veins we treat are already abnormal. We do not treat healthy, functioning veins, and you will not 'run out' of those!

Q: I was told that if you take out my vein, then I would not have any for a heart bypass.
A: This is not true. Bulging varicose veins are useless to a heart surgeon. If your leg veins are diseased, they cannot be used. Fortunately, there are plenty of other options available to the heart surgeon.

Q: I've told my doctor about my veins many times, but he told me not to worry about them, that they were just 'cosmetic.' What do you think?
A: Large bulging varicose veins cause significant pain, swelling and other symptoms. In most cases, these veins are considered to be a serious medical problem that can lead to significant complications if not treated. Many physicians discourage their patients from having anything done due to the fact that traditional vein strippings had high failure rates and left significant scarring. The new surgical and non-surgical techniques are so much easier and less painful that there is no reason to live with varicose veins anymore. Unfortunately, your physician may not be aware of all the newest techniques available for varicose vein treatment. Please help us educate them on these improvements. We’d be happy to speak to your physician or send them information on our advanced procedures.

Q: I've had vein stripping before and the veins came back. How is your treatment different?
A: The key to modern, effective treatment of varicose veins is a standing ultrasound evaluation. This is done to completely understand the root cause of the bulging veins. This key factor was not well understood until recently, and in some rural areas vein strippings are still done without the benefit of a standing ultrasound study. That means some abnormal veins were probably not treated like they should have been. If you’ve had a previous vein surgery, the only way to understand why your veins came back is a standing ultrasound. Traditional vein strippings were done in the hospital under general anesthesia and led to prolonged and painful recovery times. Our microsurgical procedures are done under local anesthesia right in our office. You are up and walking immediately after the procedure and can return to work the very next day in most cases! The key to our high success rate is the standing ultrasound study.

Q: What is sclerotherapy? Isn't it painful?
A: Sclerotherapy involves using a very small needle to inject special medications into diseased veins that cause the veins to shrink and gradually disappear. The needles used are very small. Most people find this treatment relatively painless.

Q: Do spider veins come back?
A: The spider veins treated with sclerotherapy are permanently destroyed and will be reabsorbed by the body, so they can't come back. Nothing can be done to prevent your body from forming new spider veins because its mostly hereditary. Excessive standing, crossing the legs, or being overweight does not cause them. Fortunately, new spider veins can be treated easily and effectively.
