What are the four degrees of Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, represent a serious condition of inflammation of veins in the anus and lower rectum region. The condition can cause persistent pain and discomfort in the affected area. Hemorrhoids usually happen to people who suffer from chronic constipation or frequent condition of diarrhea, and may even occur due to aging. In case of excessive pressure on the veins, hemorrhoids tend to bleed. In some cases they can protrude forward like a lump, giving an unsightly appearance.

Hemorrhoids can be external or internal, and commonly affect people who have crossed the age of 50. Fortunately, the condition is treatable nowadays due to the advancements in medical science. But it is preferable to follow the treatment at an early stage in order to avoid more serious complications later on.

Vein specialists generally classify hemorrhoids into four separate degrees based on their severity of condition:

1. In the first degree, the hemorrhoid may cause irritation, pain or even bleeding in the anal region, but they do not protrude outside the anus.

2. In the second degree, the hemorrhoid prolapses out from the anal area during bowels, but thereafter it retracts inside on its own.

3. In the third degree, the hemorrhoid prolapses out from the anal area on its own, but it does not retract back on its own. It must be done manually, and then it goes back inside.

4. In the fourth degree, the hemorrhoid permanently stays out of the anal area, and cannot even be retracted manually. In such a condition the hemorrhoid usually gets thrombosed or strangulated.

The common symptoms associated with this problem include frequent bleeding, soreness, swelling, pain, and itching in the affected area. Sometimes the condition may also be accompanied by mucus discharge. In the severe fourth degree condition, the mucus membrane of the rectum occupies the anal canal permanently.
